FIDE Rating and AICF Explained for Parents

· 1 min read · The Mind Chess Academy

Chess has its own rating system, and the terms can be confusing for new parents.

What is FIDE?

FIDE is the international chess federation. Its rating, measured in points, shows a player's strength. A player gets a first rating after playing FIDE-rated games against rated opponents.

What is AICF?

The All India Chess Federation (AICF) is the national body for chess in India. State chess associations work under it and organise many tournaments.

How does a child get rated?

  • Learn the game and play regularly.
  • Enter a FIDE-rated tournament, usually organised through a state association.
  • Play enough games against rated players to receive a first rating.

Our guide on how to get a FIDE rating covers the steps in detail. Our coaches also advise families on which tournaments suit their child's level.
