How to Prepare Your Child for a First Chess Tournament
· 1 min read · The Mind Chess Academy
A first tournament can feel big for a child. A little preparation makes it a good experience whatever the result.
Before the event
- Play practice games with a clock, so the time limit feels familiar.
- Revise basic checkmates and simple endgames.
- Make sure they know the rules, including touch-move and how to write down moves if required.
On the day
- Arrive early, with a light snack and water.
- Remind your child to check each move before playing it.
- Keep your own reactions calm, win or lose.
Afterwards
Go through the games together or with a coach. The most useful question is not who won, but what they learned. Every game shows something to practise next.
Our weekly practice tournaments give children a gentle way to get used to playing with a clock before their first official event.
